Dystopia (2019)
Sarah & Charles
Collaborating since 2004, Belgian artists Sarah & Charles draw inspiration from the world of entertainment and more specifically, its invisible structures. Subjects and genres such as make-believe, simulacrum, the story within the story, cinematic experience, the suspension of disbelief and music are playfully and thoughtfully reviewed in their research and practice. They produce architectural interventions and stage designs combining video, photography, sculpture and installation techniques that communicate both artists’ interests.

De installatie Dystopia verbeeldt 2 momenten in tijd die samenvloeien: de utopische gedachte van de jaren '60 met de pessimistische hedendaagse visie waarin grenzen steeds minder permeabel zijn. De geknoopte touwen waarin de potten hangen, rafelen uit elkaar, symmetrie is ver te zoeken en de keramiek potten zelf zakken in elkaar. Tegelijkertijd creëert de vorm van de macramé potten hangers de opening doorheen het stalen hek.
De kunstenaars Sarah & Charles ontwikkelden in samenwerking met de Nieuwe opdrachtgevers, deelnemers van de wijkwerking Marijve en CC De Ververij, in 2016 het kunstwerk Cour Jardin. Het kunstwerk staat in de Stadstuin Ronse, dichtbij het cultuurcentrum.

L’installation Dystopia imagine 2 moments qui fusionnent dans le temps: la pensée utopique des années 60 avec la vision pessimiste d’aujourd’hui dans laquelle les frontières sont de plus en plus imperméables.
Les cordes nouées dans lesquelles les pots pendent, s'effilochent, la symétrie est difficile à trouver et les pots en céramique eux-mêmes s'effondrent. En même temps, la forme des cintres en macramé crée l'ouverture à travers la grille en acier.
En 2016, les artistes Sarah & Charles ont développé l'œuvre Cour Jardin en collaboration avec de Nieuwe Opdrachtgevers, les participants du quartier Marijve et CC De Ververij. L'œuvre est située dans le jardin de la ville de Renaix, à proximité du centre culturel.

The Installation Dystopia depicts 2 moments in time that merge: the utopian thought of the 1960s with the pessimistic contemporary vision in which borders are less and less permeable. The knotted ropes in which the pots hang, fray apart, symmetry is hard to find and the ceramic pots themselves collapse. At the same time, the shape of the macramé pot hangers creates the opening through the steel gate.
In 2016, the artists Sarah & Charles developed the artwork Cour Jardin in collaboration with the ‘Nieuwe opdrachtgevers’, participants in the neighborhood activities Marijve and CC De Ververij. The artwork is located in the Stadstuin Ronse, close to the cultural center.
